  • Band
    Paper ring around the head of the cigar featuring
    the brand and logo. Often confused with the
    vitola.

    Capa
    Wrapper leaf or outer part of the cigar whose
    colour indicates its strength. Generally speaking,
    the paler the colour, the milder the cigar.

    Capillo
    Binder, The portion of leaf used to hold together
    the blend of filler leaves.

    Chaveta
    Crescent shaped knife used to cut tobacco leaves.

    Chinchal
    Business, usually family run, which manufactures
    Canary Islands cigars.

    Cigar Scissors
    Tool for cutting the cigar's head.

    _______________________________________

    Cuje
    Horizontal beam placed over two vertical poles
    used to hang up the tobacco leaves for drying.
    _______________________________________

    Despalillar
    To remove the ribs or thick veins from the tobacco
    leaves.
    _______________________________________

    Enrollar
    To roll the leaves of the barrel filler to give them a
    cylindrical shape.
    _______________________________________

    Ensarte
    Technique whereby the tobacco leaves are hung in hands of two for drying.
    _______________________________________

    Fermentation
    Process of heating and humidifying the bulk of
    tobacco leaves to alter their chemical composition.
    _______________________________________

    Gavilla
    Sheaf or bulk of forty or fifty leaves of the same
    type.
    _______________________________________

    Gomero
    Container of rice gum used to glue the head onto
    the end of the cigar.

     

    Havana
    Synonym for cigar.

    Humidor
    A wooden box equipped with hygrometer and
    thermometer which keeps the cigars fresh and in
    the best condition.

    Mazo
    Bundle of cigars tied together with a silk ribbon.
    _______________________________________

    Moja
    Moistening the tobacco leaves.
    _______________________________________

    Mould
    A wooden mould used by cigar makers to give
    the freshly rolled tobacco its barrel shape. Some
    moulds are made in two parts which are then
    placed in a press.

    Oreo
    Airing or drying the tobacco leaves or the finished cigar.
    _______________________________________

    Cap
    Tobacco leaf used to finish off the end or head of
    the cigar. It is cut off before smoking.
    _______________________________________

    Press
    Tool used to give the cigars their shape.
    _______________________________________

    Tobacco
    Plant from the Solanaceae Family.
    _______________________________________

    Roller
    A cigar craftsman. A fundamental part of the
    manufacturing process.
    _______________________________________

    Filler
    Filling or main part of a cigar made of rolled
    leaves.
    _______________________________________

    Vega
    Area where tobacco is grown.
    _______________________________________

    Veguero
    An old Spanish word for the tobacco growers
    whose small plantations were situated on plots of
    land along the river banks,

    Vitola
    Spanish word used to define the shape (Panetela,
    Corona,... ) and the size of a cigar.
    _______________________________________

    Zafado
    A shaking movement to separate or detach the
